Producing is all about making your way to the present moment and letting the music speak for itself. I’ve been lucky to produce albums for great artists including the Kitchen Dwellers, Trout Steak Revival, Never Come Down, The Sweet Lillies, Meadow Mountain, Morsel, Jake Leg, Philip St. Ours and more. I learned on the job, working on many Stringdusters albums, as well as various other studio projects, over my 20 year career. We had some great producers early on, including Tim O’brien and Tim Stafford, but ultimately evolved into the role of producers ourselves, self-producing all of our recent albums, including Laws of Gravity (co-produced with Billy Hume) which won the Grammy for Bluegrass Album of the Year in 2018. The truth is, we are all producers, of our own sound, style, and just about everything we present to the world. I love to help other artists find that zone. I also love to write and arrange music—that too it a game of intuition and experience. And of course, I love to be in the recording studio. I live in a recording studio! Working hard on music, giving it your heart and soul, and then hearing it come to life in the studio is a joy like no other. Itr’s not easy, but it’s as rewarding as anything we do.
